China-Germany industrial cooperation has broad prospects. Experts call for pragmatic cooperation to meet global economic and trade challenges
In the first quarter of 2025, China's imports and exports to the EU amounted to 1.3 trillion yuan, an increase of 1.4%. The highly complementary economies of China and Europe and their closely intertwined interests have promoted the continued positive development of bilateral trade, deburring machine.
As the "ballast stone" of China-Europe relations, China and Germany have close economic and trade exchanges. Faced with the rise of trade protectionism and the impact of US tariff policies, how can the two countries further expand cooperation? Recently, the "China-Germany Manufacturing Cooperation and Competition Seminar" was held in Beijing. Experts at the meeting discussed the cooperation and competition between China and Germany in the fields of electric vehicles, digitalization and artificial intelligence, and innovation policies.
The "complementary code" of a manufacturing power
Shi Shiwei, professor at the University of International Business and Economics and director of the China-Germany Economic and Trade Research Center of the Regional Country Research Institute, pointed out that Germany has advantages in machinery manufacturing, chemical pharmaceuticals and automobiles, and China has outstanding strengths in electrical and information technology industries, textiles and clothing. At present, the two sides have good cooperation in industrial digital transformation and are actively expanding cooperation in green economy, circular economy and new energy.
Xu Kan, director of the International Cooperation Research Office of the Industrial Economics Institute of the International Economic and Technical Cooperation Center of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, said that the concept of industrial clusters appeared earlier in Germany. China can learn from its experience and help small and medium-sized enterprises reduce innovation costs and risks and promote the development of advanced manufacturing clusters by optimizing policy coordination and promoting shared innovation models.
Pang Guanglian, member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee and Deputy Secretary-General of the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation, pointed out that German companies such as BASF and Merck are optimistic about the potential of the Chinese market and continue to increase their investment in China. In the future, China, Germany and China and Europe can not only strengthen cooperation in the life sciences and clean energy industries, but also have great potential in the fields of circular economy, digitalization, and standardization.
Pragmatic cooperation to break the tariff dilemma
The latest news shows that China and Europe have recently reached preliminary consensus on electric vehicle price negotiations, market access, and restarting the China-EU trade relief dialogue mechanism.
Ding Chun, director of the Center for European Studies at Fudan University, pointed out that China's electric vehicle industry has developed rapidly and its market share in Europe has expanded. Some European countries have become concerned, but in fact, China's industrial development conforms to global market demand. He pointed out that within the new energy vehicle industry chain, China and Europe have room for cooperation in the fields of software and hardware technology research and development, power batteries and production, and new energy supporting facilities. Faced with the US manufacturing repatriation policy and tariff barriers, the necessity of China-EU cooperation has become more prominent.
Regarding Europe's so-called "de-risking" strategy, Sun Yanhong, director of the European Economic Research Office of the Institute of European Studies of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, called on Europe to break the concept of selecting partners based on values and ideology and to carry out cooperation with China with a pragmatic attitude.
"China and Germany are economically interdependent, and Germany will not give up the Chinese market." Shi Shiwei said.
Many experts are optimistic about the potential for deepening cooperation between the two countries: Germany has strong manufacturing strength and high quality industrial products, while China has significant advantages in digital infrastructure, market size, and application scenarios. In the future, China and Germany have broad prospects for cooperation in sustainable development, financing of emerging industries, and transformation of scientific research results.
